Did we hit the target? When our military forces train, they need non-lethal ways to simulate actual battlefield conditions. The Omega 36 ignites pyrotechnic cartridges on command, providing visual and audible target recognition. We performed a detailed Software Safety Analysis on the Omega 36’s microcontroller software (firmware).
We focused our efforts on the available system documentation and the source code (“C” and assembly). The analysis required we develop a detailed understanding of the construction and circuitry of the Omega 36, and the potential failure modes of the overall system and the microcontroller. We found a number of concerns which we provided to the systems engineering group for correction:
- 17 Errors, Issues, and Concerns
- 7 Additional Safety Tests
- 10 Safety Improvement Recommendations
