The USMC changed the definition of “Troops in Contact“, a critical feature of the Software Safety design for the TLDHS. Removing all the places this data was referenced throughout the software would take many 100s of man-hours. It could also comprise the software, and thus would require extensive testing.
We proposed an alternative – leave the existing code in place, and change the safety threshold from within 1000 meters to within 0 meters. This would effectively disable the now-obsolete test, without ripping into the working, tested code.
Our innovative approach – saved many $10Ks of dollars – had no schedule impact – kept the system compliant with the new Safety requirements.
